The Rock Garden was originally established in 1983, when Marjorie Walsh, then owner of Day Star Nurseries, created a rock garden on a ledge east of the Visitors Center. She provided a large selection of plants, and the collection continued to grow over the years.
In 1997, a massive ice storm undid nearly all of Ms. Walsh's work, until, that is, a team of Master Gardeners associated with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Program, took the garden over, restored it lovingly, and continue to care for it as a place of peace and inspirationplace to visit, displaying a natural area of ledge with a collection of rock garden-appropriate plants set on a hillside.
