General Summary: Our Land Manager is responsible for the ongoing care and maintenance of botanical gardens, trails, and our indoor facilities; working to bring the facility to excellent horticultural, aesthetic, and ecological condition.

Compensation: $24/hr. - 30 hours per week.

Supervisor: Executive Director

Administrative

  • Supervise and teach Land Management Steward, interns, and seasonal grounds/building maintenance volunteers.

  • Collaborate with existing partners including Bureau of Parks and Lands, Maine Forest Service, Natural Resources Conservation District and others.

  • Work with the land management committee to follow and update grounds maintenance plan; which includes approaches for IPM, botanical collection design/layout, etc.

  • Work with staff to prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports related to work performed.

  • Read maps and interpret plans, specifications, and maintenance manuals.

Landscaping and General Maintenance

  • Identify, schedule, and complete daily and weekly tasks throughout the Arboretum.

  • Perform various grounds maintenance functions; mows, trims, edges, fertilizes, aerates, prune, mulch, feed, fertilize, and irrigate plants, shrubs, trees, and groundcover.

  • Ensure that trails and open spaces are maintained as necessary and that all signs, benches, bridges, and associated structures are installed and remain in good condition.

  • Maintain, trim, prune, and remove dead, broken, or superfluous branches or tops of trees; clear limbs and brush from remove diseased, standing, or fallen trees. Restore botanical gardens, manage invasive species, limbs, and replant as needed.

  • Inspect grounds and respond to hazards and public calls as necessary, correct or report safety hazards.

  • Operate a variety of hand and power tools, such as hand mowers, edgers, blowers, hedge trimmers, long-handled clippers, and similar tools, weed eaters, chain saws, rakes, shovels, hoes, brooms, and other maintenance tools.

  • Operate a variety of light duty motorized equipment in the maintenance of landscaped areas; drive pickup trucks, tractors, ATVs, and other motorized vehicles and equipment; load and unload trucks of refuse, trimmings, sand, rock, and other material.

  • Work with the Executive Director to estimate and secure parts and materials required to complete assignments.

  • Assist in planning and set-up for special events and large group visits, as needed.

Job Qualifications

  • Experience in horticulture, botany, forestry, ecology, landscaping, agriculture, recreation, or related fields and demonstrated relevant work experience in similar or related areas.

  • Strong interest in conservation, ecological management, plants and their proper culture and care. Knowledge and experience in arboricultural work is desirable, but not required. Must be able to operate essential equipment and tools, and have a basic understanding of them, including their care and maintenance.

  • Applicants should possess, or be willing to learn and test for, a pesticide applicators license.

  • Ability to work in a variety of terrains and landscapes carrying up to 40 pounds.

  • A willingness to work outside in a variety of weather conditions, independently or in a group setting.

  • Ability to safely operate a chainsaw, and a range of lawn and garden tools, and ride-on equipment such as a diesel tractor and ride-on lawn mower.

  • Ability to manage a large and diverse project load, complete assignments, collaborate, delegate, work to meet deadlines and work within established budgets.

  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
